A custom WordPress store the client runs without a developer
A trading card marketplace built from scratch on WordPress — a bespoke theme rather than an off-the-shelf template, fully responsive, and wired so the client adds, edits and removes products, categories and content themselves from the admin.

The challenge
The Hobby Card Shop sells trading cards and collectibles — football, cricket, Pokémon and anime TCG, sealed boxes and packs, supplies and memorabilia — to collectors who care a great deal about how a card is presented.
The brief was specific: a WordPress store on a custom theme, not a marketplace template dressed up with a plugin. And it had to be a store they could actually run. A catalogue like this changes constantly — new drops, sold singles, shifting categories — and every change going through a developer would have made the shop slower than the hobby it serves.
What we were asked to do
Design and build a bespoke WordPress theme for the store, make it work properly on every screen, and hand over a site where the client controls the catalogue and the content themselves.
What we did
Designed the storefront from scratch
A bespoke theme rather than a purchased template, designed around how collectors actually browse — by sport, by set, by rarity — so the layout serves the catalogue instead of the catalogue being forced into a layout.
Built the theme to match the design
The theme was coded to the design rather than assembled in a page builder, which keeps the markup clean and the storefront quick, and leaves nothing that has to be fought with later.
Made it responsive across devices
Storefront, category pages, product pages and checkout all hold their layout from a phone to a desktop, which matters for a catalogue browsed as much on the move as at a desk.
Wired up the commerce side
Products, variants, categories, cart and checkout built out on WooCommerce, with the category structure shaped around how the shop groups its stock rather than the default taxonomy.
Put the client in control of the catalogue
Everything the shop changes day to day — products, prices, images, categories, page content — is editable from the WordPress admin. Adding a drop or retiring a sold card is an admin task, not a support ticket.
Handed over with training
The client was walked through managing the store themselves, so the handover ended with them running it rather than with a dependency on whoever built it.
Results
- Self-serveStore management
- Products, categories, prices, images and page content are all managed by the client from the WordPress admin, so routine changes no longer wait on a developer.
- CustomTheme, built from scratch
- No off-the-shelf template and no page builder — the theme was designed and coded for this store, so the storefront matches the brief rather than the nearest available layout.
- ResponsiveAcross every screen
- Storefront, catalogue, product pages and checkout hold their layout from phone to desktop.
